# Check Japan Rainfall and Short-Term Radar Forecasts

Daily plans can depend on rainfall at a specific location during the next hour. This skill guides assistants through public JMA radar data to report approximate rainfall intensity and short-term changes.

## Capabilities

- Retrieve available observation and forecast timestamps from public JMA endpoints without an API key or login.
- Calculate XYZ tile coordinates from latitude, longitude, and zoom using the provided Python example.
- Download radar PNG tiles for available observation or forecast times.
- Inspect tile palette indices with Pillow to estimate rainfall intensity at a selected pixel.
- Compare current observations with upcoming forecast tiles and report timestamps in Japan Standard Time.
- Handle failed requests with limited retries, refreshed timestamp lists, and a link to the official JMA map.

## Use Cases

- Plan a Short Commute: Compare current rainfall and available forecasts near a station before choosing when to leave.
- Schedule an Outdoor Visit: Check approximate rainfall near a destination during the next 30 to 60 minutes.
- Coordinate Outdoor Work: Review timestamped radar estimates near a work site and communicate uncertainty before scheduling short outdoor tasks.

## Prompt Templates

### Check Current Rain

```
Check current rainfall near latitude 35.68, longitude 139.77. Report approximate intensity and the observation time in JST.
```

### Compare the Next Hour

```
Compare current rainfall with available forecasts over the next hour near latitude 35.68, longitude 139.77. Include JST timestamps and uncertainty.
```

### Check Several Locations

```
Compare rainfall now and over the next 30 minutes at these Japan coordinates: [locations]. Separate observations from forecasts and report unavailable data.
```

### Review the Radar Evidence

```
For [latitude, longitude], report returned JMA timestamps, tile coordinates, and sampled palette indices. Compare neighboring pixels and separate estimates from verified facts.
```

## Limitations

- The color legend is approximate and does not establish official rainfall rates in millimeters per hour.
- The scope is short-term rainfall in Japan, not tomorrow's weather, warnings, earthquakes, or tsunami information.
- Execution requires network access, curl, Python, and Pillow or ImageMagick; pixel coordinates must be supplied for the image example.
- The referenced shared response checklist is not included in this skill package.

## Best Practices

- Use timestamp pairs returned by JMA and include JST times with every observation and forecast.
- Describe intensity as approximate and inspect nearby pixels when a single pixel may be noisy.
- Report retrieval failures explicitly and use an isolated environment when installing optional image tools.

## Anti Patterns

- Do not interpret failed requests, missing tiles, or unavailable forecasts as evidence of no rain.
- Do not invent timestamp pairs or present the measured palette as an official millimeters-per-hour legend.
- Do not use this short-term radar skill as a substitute for official warnings or longer-range forecasts.

## Security Audit

- Audited at: 2026-10-13T02:59:18.249\+00:00
- Summary: All 18 static findings are false positives: Markdown formatting, public JMA URLs, a documentation link, weather prose, and readable multilingual text. The documented commands retrieve weather data and inspect local images; no evidence found of credential theft, malicious execution, or prompt injection. Network access, local tile downloads, and optional image tools support the stated weather workflow.
