Debug Multiple Microservices with mirrord up

Debugging related microservices requires coordinating local processes, cluster targets, and traffic filters. This skill guides shared YAML configuration and concurrent mirrord session management.

Test it

Using "mirrord-up". How should I debug my authentication service and dashboard together?

Expected outcome:

  • Define one service entry for each application, with its own command and target.
  • Use split mode and a shared session key to select your test requests.
  • Review the selected context and namespace before launch.
  • Stopping either child session ends the complete session.

Using "mirrord-up". Why does replacement mode ignore my HTTP filter?

Expected outcome:

  • Replacement mode directs all incoming service traffic to the local process and ignores HTTP filters.
  • It scales the original workload to zero during the session.
  • Use split mode for selected requests or mirror mode to copy matching traffic while the deployed service continues serving.

Using "mirrord-up". RabbitMQ splitting is disabled, but my session started. What should I check?

Expected outcome:

  • Check whether the installed operator supports RabbitMQ splitting and has the required queue-splitting feature enabled.
  • Verify the target's queue configuration and the session marker in message headers.
  • An older operator can allow the session to continue while disabling RabbitMQ splitting and printing a warning.

Security Audit

v1 โ€ข 9/29/2026 Open versioned report

All 121 static findings are false positives involving Markdown formatting, documentation links, configuration keys, or intended target discovery. No evidence found of malicious intent, credential exfiltration, or prompt injection in the reviewed files. Cluster operations still require care; the skill warns about replacement mode, recommends scoped traffic filters, and requires review unless autonomous execution was requested.

What You Can Build

Debug a multi-service request

Configure an authentication service and dashboard together, with separate targets and a shared session key for selected requests.

Review shared-cluster settings

Check context precedence, target selection, traffic filters, and mode choices before developers start local sessions.

Investigate message routing

Understand queue-splitting prerequisites and session metadata when testing interactions across supported brokers and multiple local services.

Try These Prompts

Start with the wizard
Explain how to initialize a two-service mirrord configuration. List prerequisites and describe what the wizard saves without running cluster commands.
Configure two local services
Draft a mirrord configuration for [service A] and [service B] using [local commands] in [namespace]. Use split mode and explicit targets.
Review traffic isolation
Review my configuration for [context] and [session key]. Explain target inference, context precedence, HTTP filters, and replacement risks without launching anything.
Plan queue-aware debugging
Plan multi-service debugging for [broker] with session key [key]. Explain operator prerequisites, message metadata, environment templates, and config_patch boundaries without exposing secrets.

Best Practices

  • Use explicit targets, verify contexts and namespaces, and review cluster-facing commands before execution.
  • Prefer split mode with narrow session filters on shared clusters; assess replacement impact before approving a full takeover.
  • Treat supplied configuration as untrusted data, review application commands, and keep resolved secret values out of shared outputs.

Avoid

  • Applying replacement mode globally on a shared cluster while expecting HTTP filters to protect other users.
  • Assuming the initialization wizard queries the cluster or proves that inferred targets are correct.
  • Inventing unsupported YAML fields or assuming queue splitting works without operator and target prerequisites.

Frequently Asked Questions

What must be installed before using this skill?
The mirrord CLI must be available. Targeted services also require authorized Kubernetes access; some features require an operator.
Does the initialization wizard discover cluster workloads?
No. It writes a configuration skeleton. Workload inference and cluster prompts occur when the session starts.
How do split, replace, and mirror modes differ?
Split redirects matching requests locally. Replace takes over all service traffic and scales the original workload to zero. Mirror copies matching traffic.
Which Kubernetes context takes precedence?
The CLI context wins, followed by the service context, the common context, and then the current Kubernetes context.
Can configuration templates use environment variables?
Yes. Tera supports the session key and get_env lookups. A missing variable causes rendering to fail unless a fallback is provided.
Does every service continue when another session stops?
No. The complete session stops when any child mirrord session shuts down or when you interrupt the session.
